The Clean Air Clear Stars festival returns to Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace next weekend with a bigger lineup than ever before. The volunteer-run festival’s mission since its inception in 2007 has been to raise money to benefit causes which fight global warming. This year, all proceeds from their ticket sales will go to the Arbor Day Foundation, which plants trees across the United States.

Earlier this year, CACS’ organizers had stated that a festival would not be possible in 2011 due to funding difficulties. However, a Kickstarter project succeeded in raising over $7,000, which the festival organizers will use to pay for operating expenses such as sound, lights, crew, stage rentals, equipment costs, and other necessities.

Headlining the festival’s fifth anniversary are two shoegaze legends: Adam Franklin & Bolts of Melody, fronted by Adam Franklin of Swervedriver, and Mark Gardener of Ride. Gardener will be backed by members of Sky Parade, the Los Angeles-based band fronted by CACS founder Tommy Dietrick. Scroll down to hear Sky Parade covering a Ride song, “Leave Them All Behind.”

Also performing this year are neo-psych band The Warlocks, psychedelic spaghetti western band Spindrift, The Icarus Line, The Black Ryder, The Morning After Girls, Lemon Sun, Pink Mountaintops, The Country (featuring members of Gram Rabbit), Jason Simon of Dead Meadow, Miranda Lee Richards, Magic Mirror, and Miracle Falls featuring Paul Dillon (ex-Mercury Rev), among others. DJing the event are such luminaries as Joel Gion of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Paul Dillon of Perfect Prescription NYC, and prodigious drummer Plucky, who has played with bands such as The Warlocks and Spindrift, in addition to hosting the notorious Soundgasm DJ night in Los Angeles for many years along with Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Plucky, a founding organizer of the Clean Air Clear Stars festival, said in a recent interview with The Underground Echo, “The festival has been about turning people on to new music and having some of our favorite bands play, while supporting a good cause at the same time.”

This year’s Clean Air Clear Stars festival takes place on September 23 and 24. Tickets are $20 for each day, or $30 for a weekend pass, and can be purchased through Ticketfly.

A pre-festival kickoff party will be held at The Satellite (formerly Spaceland) in Los Angeles on September 22, featuring Jason Simon of Dead Meadow, 1776, The Black Apples, and Peace (featuring ex-Brian Jonestown Massacre member Jeff Davies).

Past CACS festivals have included such artists as The Dandy Warhols, The Entrance Band, Robby Krieger of The Doors, Dead Meadow, The Meek, The Asteroid #4, Sky Parade, Hopewell, The Tyde, The Sky Drops, and many more.

Two U.K. greats from the ’90s —Mark Gardener of Ride (pictured) and Adam Franklin of Swervedriver — highlight the lineup for the fifthClean Air Clear Stars Festival at Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace on Sept. 23 and 24. Franklin will be performing with his band Adam Franklin & Bolts of Melody at the annual psych-rock-leaning affair, a benefit for the Arbor Day Foundation that also will boast appearances from the Icarus Line, the Morning After Girls, the Warlocks, Miranda Lee Richards, the Gram Rabbit side project the Country, Lemon Sun, Magic Mirror, Steve McBean of Black Mountain, RT n’ the 44′s, Tears of the Moose Chaser, Highway, the Black Ryder, Golden Ghosts, Miracle Falls and Rachel Fannan, among others. Two special guests are yet to be announced.
